About the Opportunity

The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for two fulltime psychiatrists.
The Department of Psychiatry is a mid-sized clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry work as members of multidisciplinary teams within the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addiction Program to provide general psychiatric services to patients primarily in the Central Zone and specialty services to patients across the province.
The positions will be co-located at the emergency department and the day hospital program at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Clinical duties will be directed by the section head for acute, consultation and emergency psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Central Zone, and the position reports directly to the section head, and ultimately to the department head.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Act as attending or consultant physician to patients within the Mental Health Day Hospital Program
  • In collaboration with other psychiatrists on the team, act as attending or consultant physician to patients within the mental health program, psychiatric emergency and urgent care services. This includes emergency services, urgent care (rapid follow-up) and mobile crisis
  • Conduct, order or ensure appropriate psychiatric assessments, appropriate psychosocial and laboratory investigations, and pharmacological & psychosocial treatment interventions as per current standard practice by adult psychiatrists
  • Provide telephone consultations to primary care providers
  • Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule as required within the clinical program
  • Share in the short-term coverage of other services as needed during holidays or illness of other members of staff
  • Contribute to the academic mandate of the department and Dalhousie University by supervising residents, medical students and other learners in psychiatric emergency assessment and management; participating in didactic teaching; and engaging in other academic activities at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development levels

There is the opportunity for a clinical leadership role in emergency psychiatry.

Qualifications

  • Fellowship in psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent as determined by the Department of Psychiatry;
  • eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).

Remuneration is based upon a highly competitive Academic Funding Plan, which pays for time spent in clinical service, teaching and research. Successful candidates will receive academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience as per university protocols.
