The WES Immigrant Youth Internship Program:

We are currently accepting applications for our Immigrant Youth Internship Program (June to August 2023). The program supports immigrant youth (i.e., first generation immigrants, second generation immigrants, refugee youth, or international students) with obtaining meaningful work experience and building their professional portfolio. This Internship Role:


Description:

WES is recruiting an Employer Solutions Intern to support our Employer Initiatives team, in implementing several employment-focused initiatives that seek to engage employers in co-designing strategies and tools to connect immigrants, refugees and international students to meaningful employment. You will report to the Associate Director, Employer Initiatives and work closely and collaboratively with all members of the GTB team in Canada as well as other WES departments. You can expect to build skills and work experience in research, program management and partnership building, in an organization committed to learning, and incorporating justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) into our practice.

We encourage prospective interns to learn more about WES Canada’s social impact activities, including Global Talent Bridge work with partners, research and policy advocacy, and philanthropy.


Duties included but not limited to:

Conduct research and support data collection and visualization:

  • Support planning and preparations for key virtual internal and external meetings, including key informant interviews with employers.
  • Review data collected in the employer interviews and develop reports, summaries and presentation slides.

Support the design and implementation of a learning program:

  • Help to conceptualize, design, and organize workshops, trainings, and other learning opportunities for community-based organizations.
  • Develop story ideas, outlines and draft copy for blog posts, articles, and other collateral for B2B and B2C audiences.

Administrative and logistical support:

  • Supporting project management of various projects, including providing logistical and administrative support.

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Have a commitment to advancing the socio-economic inclusion of immigrants, refugees, and international students and to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Have a strong understanding and/or experience of issues relating to immigration.
  • Be an action-oriented person who is a self-starter and can work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Have professional or volunteer experience working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Have a deep-rooted intellectual curiosity and openness to diverse ideas and perspectives.
  • Thrive in an environment that values transparency, collaboration, and an orientation for results.
  • Build collaborative working relationships with colleagues and external partners.

Requirements:

  • Current student enrolled in an educational program in social sciences, education, public policy, international relations, economics, and/or other relevant program.
  • Brings lived experience as a first-generation immigrant, second generation immigrant, refugee youth, or international student.
  • Ability to research, synthesize and integrate disparate pieces of data, analysis, and information.
  • Organized and detail oriented with track record of delivering high-quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to convey complex information appropriately to stakeholders with different backgrounds and needs.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience designing trainings and workshops is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, especially Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is an asset.

Working Conditions:

WES employees work remotely and the intern will work remotely with teams across Canada and the U.S. This internship is open to candidates from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, or Nova Scotia. Interns who are based near our Toronto Office can enjoy the flexibility of working in the office or at home. WES’ Toronto office has a shared, open office environment with break-out and meeting rooms and light to moderate noise.


Hours: Full-time, 35 hours a week with flexible working options

Duration: 12 weeks, June to August (tentative program start: June 6)

Rate of Pay: $24 / hr

Equipment: Laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship
