Engineer - Network Switch

POSITION OVERVIEW

Accountable for the design, provisioning, deployment, and support of the TDM and Next Generation Switching technologies, systems, and related network equipment. Ensures deployment of the switching network in a cost effective and timely manner to meet the customer's needs for telecommunication services. Provides technical support and consulting services for other Switching and Network related projects as dictated by SaskTel's business priorities, including areas such as Telco Cloud, wireless core, and automation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Design and successfully coordinate the deployment of SaskTel's legacy TDM and Next Generation Succession network elements and switching software upgrades in accordance with SaskTel and Nortel's network plan.
2. Ensure that large, complex network projects are implemented and completed within time and budget constraints by utilizing project control methods.
3. Accountable to ensure that the current network is sufficiently engineered and provisioned to adequate capacity in order to meet forecasted customer requirements.
4. Accountable for a thorough end to end understanding of SaskTel's legacy TDM and Next Generation Succession network to be able to predict the impact of any changes to both the network and SaskTel's voice and VoIP services as a result of new features, hardware, or software additions.
5. Contribute to cost effective use of corporate financial resources through the planning, submission, and monitoring of major corporate network project expenditures.
6. Ensure SaskTel customers receive quality service by providing technical advice and assistance to peers and other departments.
7. Provides professional and technical consulting expertise to Network Planning, Core Network Engineering, Network & District Operations, and Network Support.
8. Provide professional and technical expertise and mentorship to Core Network Engineering Assistants.
9. Define technical requirements for vendor selection. Consult with and manage vendor and partner relationships
10.Provides leadership and project management for Wireless Core Switching and Telco Cloud Core Network Engineering projects and initiatives.
11.Responsible for leading Core Network Engineering automation opportunities, including design and implementation using enterprise tools and methodologies.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

1. Education and experience (one of the following combinations):

a. University degree in Electrical, Electronic, Software, or Systems Engineering with at least six years of relevant Core IP and Transport technology experience. Preference will be given to those with a master’s degree in engineering. Must be eligible for registration with the Association of Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. OR
b. Degree in Computer Science, with at least seven years of relevant Core IP and Transport technology experience. OR
c. Diploma or Certificate in Engineering Technology, with at least eight years of relevant Core Switching and IP related technology experience.
2. Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of SaskTel’s legacy and succession switching and transport technologies.
3. Demonstrated understanding of design and implementation of technology concepts, developments, and issues.
4. Ability to function in ambiguous situations, with particular emphasis on design, deployment, operation and integration of emerging technologies.
5. Proven and demonstrated Project Management skills and processes, as outlined in SaskTel's Corporate Project Management Office.
6. Ability to learn new technologies and apply them for effective solution of business problems.
7. Excellent written and oral communications and interpersonal skills.
8. Must have a valid driver's license.
