We are currently adding an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to our team in Fort McMurray, AB.

Reports to: National Manager, EHS

Secondary Matrix Manager: Regional Manager, Northern Alberta

Shift: 7 x 7, Wednesday – Tuesday, 12 hours per day

Location: Fort McMurray, AB

Relocation: This position does not offer relocation

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provide EHS support to the Fort McMurray Operations andother areas as required.
  • Ensures compliance to OH&S laws, regulations and standards. Provide support and advice to all levels within the organization regarding OH&S Act, Code and Regulation and other applicable legislation as required.
  • Drives and supports the Incident Management process. Recommend corrective and preventive actions. Track implementation success.
  • Lead and assist in the Risk Management process within the operation (Risk Assessments, Job Hazard Analysis).
  • Promote and drive the use of diverse safety tools (FLRA’s, Safety Inspections & Observations, Near Hit report cards).
  • Work with the regional Workers’ Compensation Board. Constantly review the Incident Summary; manage claims, complete Employer’s Reports.
  • Attend and prepare safety meetings and actively participate in work planning processes.
  • Monitor safety performance across the business location, analyze stats & trends, and support business management in the development of action plans to improve performance to meet and exceed goals.
  • Be accessible by various levels within the organization as an impartial resource for environmental, health and safety concerns.
  • Assist and support the business by monitoring the safety performance of contractors that are performing hands on work within our business.
  • Develop and implement training material and EHS policies. Preform EHS orientations. Train employees on general / basic safety related subjects.
  • Responsible of safety related databases (Safety record spreadsheet, Incident Database).
  • Be the advisor of the EHS Committee.
  • Must be willing to travel within Canada up to 35% to our active sites and regional offices.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Health & Safety role.
  • NCSO or similar designation. Occupational Health and Safety Certificate is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and a working knowledge of: OH&S legislation, WHMIS, emergency response planning, Lock Out-Tag Out, Fall Protection, Confined Spaces, risk and hazard assessments, incident investigations, Basic and Specialized Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, individual and team based settings.
  • Demonstrated communication, reporting and leadership team skills are essential.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, adaptable and flexible.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Capable of Public Speaking.
  • Ability to manage a wide range of work assignments and changing priorities.
  • A combination of Field and Industrial experience is required.
  • Project management skills/experience an asset.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), internet and data base experience.
  • Up to date Safety tickets: WHIMIS, Confined Space, Fall Protection and First Aid are an asset
  • Valid Driver’s license with no limitations
  • Must have no restrictions for access to any mine site
