Job Title: Environmental Manager

Location: Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia

Schedule / Terms of Employment: This is a full-time permanent position.

Primary Purpose

The primary responsibility for this position is to support the mine site operations team with the objective of meeting safety and production targets by ensuring compliance with environmental permit conditions, applicable legislation, and agreements with stakeholders. This will be achieved by:

• Conducting activities in accordance with company policies and values.
• Managing environmental programs site wide to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements. and commitments and agreements with First Nations stakeholders.
• Implementing and effectively communicating environmental policies and standards.
• Providing leading practice environmental services to support our core business.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure site is operated in compliance with permit and other regulatory requirements, Company’s Environmental Policy, Company’s Environmental Management System and Company’s Environmental commitments to regulators, First Nations, and other stakeholders.
• Conducting activities in accordance with company policies and values.
• Managing the establishment, implementation, and review of Environmental programs site wide to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements and commitments and agreements with First Nations stakeholders, including exploratory, baseline, construction, operational and closure conditions.
• Implementing and effectively communicating environmental policies and standards.
• Providing leading practice Environmental services to support our core business.
• Identify environmental risks associated with the site’s activities, products and services and communicate and implement approved risk mitigation measures. Complete environmental risk assessments whenever the company’s activities, products or services change in a way that might affect environmental aspects.
• Providing environmental expertise during major permitting processes and leading minor permit applications and amendments.
• Understanding and interpreting environmental permit and regulatory requirements for site staff and anticipate requirements for permit amendments to limit impacts to production.
• Project management (environmental works), departmental budget development and management.
• Analyzing and interpreting site-generated environmental data and direct internal and external reporting functions.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Earth/Environmental Science, Geochemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Seven to Ten (7-10) years of experience in implementing technical environmental programs, with experience in a management role.
• Broad-based experience with environmental aspects related to the mining industry, including but not limited to water quality, air quality, environmental effects monitoring, permitting, regulatory liaison and consultation with stakeholders and First Nations.
• Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, including operational, engineering, and environmental staff, to meet operational objectives, develop programs to manage risks, meet corporate and stakeholder requirements and maintain compliance.
• Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with regulatory agencies, First Nations, and other stakeholders.
• Experience with Environmental Management Systems.

Skills and Abilities

• Experience in implementing technical environmental programs in relation to resource development, and preferably in mining.
• Working knowledge of environmental Legislation relevant to mining in BC, including but not limited to the BC Mines Act, BC Environmental Management Act, Federal Fisheries Act, Federal Species at Risk Act, BC Wildlife Act.
• Competency in leading practice Risk Assessment and Management approaches.
• Competency in implementing and maintaining Environmental Management Systems.
• Able to work independently and unsupervised.
• Strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong project and process management skills.
• Able to communicate and work well with a diverse range of groups including operational, engineering, and environmental staff.
• Proficiency in communicating with Regulators, First Nations, and other stakeholders.
• Understanding and the ability to apply leading practice techniques and technologies related to environmental management at a mine site.
