Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Northcote, the Farm Support and Curricular Experiences Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the Northcote Farm Operations Manager in the implementation of the yearly Farm Plan. This includes supporting the daily farm operations (planting, cultivating and harvesting of crops), and supporting all curricular and co-curricular student activities at Northcote Farm.
The Farm Support and Curricular Experiences Coordinator will work with the Outdoors Every Day Coordinator and Outdoors Every Day Manager to align the Farm Plan with the student experience mandate and will connect with them weekly to discuss meaningful student engagement and how they will support the programming at Northcote Farm.
Specific Accountabilities
Northcote Farm Operations (approx. 25 hours/week):

  • Supporting with planting, cultivating, harvesting, field management (present and future) and succession planning of crops on the 2-acre farm land;
  • Supporting with the execution of the Farm Plan, to be presented and reviewed at the end of the previous season;
  • Supporting with record keeping of produce quantity, quality and notes for subsequent seasons;
  • Ensure the Farm Plan is implemented with the goal of meaningful student engagement;
  • Support with daily management of the farm including support with weekend watering and care schedules;
  • Support with the care, maintenance, orderliness of the Farm Barn.

School Curricular & Co - Curricular Support (approx. 15 hours/week):

  • Organization and facilitation of student, guest and staff tours;
  • Regular collaboration with the Northcote Team to ensure student experiences are meaningful teaching and learning opportunities;
  • Be present for occasional “Command Performances” as determined by the school;
  • Support the Outdoors Every Day Coordinator with all co-curricular activities (sports team visits, Service Learning, House visits, etc.)
  • Be the point of contact for teachers who are looking to implement curricular connections on the farm;
  • Support the Northcote Team to ensure the overall success of the Northcote programs;
  • Develop youth partnerships with local (Big Brothers Big Sisters, New Canadian Centre, Curve Lake First Nation, etc.).
  • As a general rule, School Curricular and Co-Curricular needs take priority over the Northcote Farm Operations for this position.

Schedule

  • March 30, 2023 - November 1, 2023
  • The schedule, typically Monday - Friday (approximately 40 hours a week, April - October), will be variable in response to the seasonal demands and requirements of the role and work needed and will include regular weekend work.
  • Time off during the growing season shall be considered a special request.

Course and Certification Requirements (to be provided by the school)

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C/AED
  • CASA Tractor & Farm Machinery Course

Candidates applying for the position should be physically fit (able to lift 40 plus pounds as well as squat, kneel, bend, etc.). The Farm Support and Experiences Coordinator will be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and should have previous experience with outdoor physical labour. Previous farm experience would be considered an asset, however, if you are extremely keen and feel you are a good fit and capable of the list of requirements, we would also welcome your application. The successful candidate will also need to provide a clear criminal background check, including vulnerable sector screening at the time of hire.

  • Work as a productive team member as well as independently as required
  • Physically fit and work in a variety of walking, bending, crouching, and kneeling positions
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to complete repetitive tasks
  • Reliable transportation a must, valid class G license considered an asset
