Introduction about Organization: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for delivering federally mandated programs for food inspection, plant and animal health. The Agency relies on high-quality, timely and relevant science as the basis of its program design and regulatory decision-making. Scientific activities inform the Agency's understanding of risks, provide evidence for the development of mitigation measures, and confirm the effectiveness of these measures. CFIA scientific activities include laboratory testing, research, surveillance, test method development, risk assessments and expert scientific advice. Agency scientists maintain strong partnerships with universities, federal, provincial and international counterparts, as well as industry, in order to effectively carry out the CFIA's mandate.

The National Centre for Animal Diseases (NCAD) in Lethbridge, Alberta, is an integral part of the CFIA, contributing to the health of animals through diagnostic testing and research initiatives. The laboratory is designated as the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) reference laboratory for anthrax, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD). WOAH Reference Laboratories are designated to pursue the scientific and technical problems that relate to a specific disease or topic. Its role is to function as a center of expertise and standardization of diagnostic techniques for its designated disease.

Job Description: Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs; alternatively also known as prion diseases) are a group of neurodegenerative diseases which affect both human and animals. BSE is a TSE in cattle with no diagnostic test available for its ante-mortem detection and is diagnosed only post-mortem. The TSE unit at NCAD Lethbridge is a national and WOAH’s reference lab for BSE and conducts a variety of regulatory research involving (but not limited to) biomarker development for ante-mortem detection of BSE. The TSE unit is currently looking for a graduate student research assistant interested in pursuing Master’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Waqas Tahir (https://profils-profiles.science.gc.ca/en/profile/dr-waqas-tahirand https://www.ulethbridge.ca/artsci/biological-sciences/meet-our-people). This recruitment is for a research project on investigating the pre-mortem diagnostic potential of Neuro-filament Light chain in Bovine spongiform Encephalopathy at NCAD, Lethbridge, and will provide stipend and benefits to the selected candidate for a period of two years (subjected to the availability of funding).

Qualification: A strong academic background with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, molecular-biology, biochemistry, medicine and/ or veterinary medicine, with prior hands on experience (through Co-op research programs) of biochemical methods (such as Western-blotting, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Immunohistochemistry (IHC)) and microscopy will be preferred. Successful candidate must meet admissions requirements for their desired academic program and relocate to Lethbridge, AB, Canada. Both domestic and international candidates are encouraged to apply.
