The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is primarily responsible for the general fleet repair and maintenance of heavy construction and industry specific equipment that includes shears, and attachments. Additional duties would include the coordination and scheduling of repairs and preventive maintenance for a fleet of Heavy Trucks and Trailers, as well as assigning and supervising the day-to-day duties off the shop staff. This role is responsible for ensuring that all work in the shop is completed in a safe and timely fashion and that a clean, organized work site is maintained. This position must also adhere to our safety program and work as a contributing member of the shop team. This position is shop-based but will require time outside in the yard and occasional trips to the field.
Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example and drive of all SECURE’s safety policies and procedures
  • Provide proven leadership & clear direction to heavy duty mechanics, welders and distributing workload to capitalize on individual and group strengths while ensuring balanced exposure to work experience and development opportunities
  • Perform routine maintenance, such as oil, filter changes, etc.
  • Air & Hydraulic Systems, Power & Drive Train, Steering and Suspension, Heavy Equipment Attachments
  • Fix one-off equipment issues
  • Make inspections and do basic diagnostics
  • Must be able to operate equipment to perform diagnostic tests
  • Visual inspections to proactively discover future mechanical failure hazards / ensuring that the issues are rectified immediately
  • Assist with general up-keep of the shop and yard as required
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly handled and store
  • Communicate effectively with the safety department
  • Conduct and partake in all safety related meetings
  • Be cognizant of and adhere to any site specific safety requirements when in the field
  • *Qualifications:
  • Journeyman’s Certification as Heavy Equipment Technician, through successful completion of a Provincially regulated Apprenticeship Program, or equivalent credentials/work experience as determined by Provincial guidelines/requirements
  • Previous supervision considered a definite asset
  • Minimum 3-5 years of related industry work experience or demonstrated competency
  • Welding experience an asset
  • Valid and current Class 5 Driver’s License with clean driver’s abstract (air brake endorsement preferred)
  • Ability to complete safety documentation in an accurate and timely manner
  • Expert knowledge level and full competency with respect to maintenance, servicing, diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing heavy duty equipment and vehicles
  • Excellent analytical problem solving skills and ability to logically process diagnostic information collected
  • Strong background in Hydraulic Systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and understand work orders
  • Ability to test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure repaired equipment meets manufacturers’ specifications and legislated requirements
  • Ability to accurately complete service reports
  • Strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment and ability to work in cramped or awkward positions
  • An inherent interest and mechanical ability to stay abreast changes in technology with respect to heavy duty equipment, electronics and new diagnostic tools
