Horizontal Directional Driller

Solo Cable is currently seeking a Horizontal Directional Driller to join our operations in Southwestern Ontario for a permanent, full-time position.

  • Work focused in Southwestern Ontario - may extend to 200 kilometers
  • Head Office – Brantford

Essential Qualifications:

  • Willing to work overtime, weekends, evenings
  • Able to do physically demanding work i.e., digging and carrying of heavy equipment
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions
  • Must be willing to cross-train and develop skill set
  • Must be safety conscious
  • Basic math skills
  • Excellent collaboration/communication skills; able to communicate and receive direction from others
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and repetitive tasks, managing time efficiently
  • Mechanically inclined; able to maintain company truck, machinery or tools assigned, trouble-shoot, repair and replace as appropriate
  • Geographical knowledge sufficient to read maps and follow directions.
  • Competent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Able to work efficiently with minimal supervision; Self-motivated, disciplined, organized and a team player
  • Must adhere to all company specific policies and regulations

Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with locator, operate the directional drill using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place cables and / or ducts
  • Performs box locating, directional drilling, installation of conduits for various cables, installation of pedestals and concrete bases, flush mount vaults and enclosures
  • Coordinates drilling activities with other activities, positioning or moving of loads and conduct in response to hand or audio signals from team members
  • Understand how to lay out a bore path with plans and locates
  • Complete a range of physically demanding tasks like:
  • Handling and distributing materials
  • Loading and unloading vehicles with supplies and equipment
  • Lift/carry tools and equipment throughout a work site
  • Restore work sites
  • Installing/coupling conduits and pulling cable/fibers
  • Hand dig trenches
  • Take part in ensuring the maintenance of vehicles and equipment daily
  • Read and interpret plans, blue-prints, as-built drawings and locates

Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 Year Previous Horizontal Drill experience
  • Must have valid Ontario Driver’s License
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Clean Driver’s Abstract/CVOR Abstract to be insurable
  • Must provide your own Steel Toed Safety boots and work pants
  • Language: fluent in English
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Experience in Telecommunication Construction an asset
  • Previous experience working with Telecommunication Fiber Optic and Coax installation is an asset
  • Experience operating heavy equipment an asset
  • DZ/AZ License an asset
