Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Indigenous Advisor and Community Outreach Specialist acts as an Indigenous Advisor to Woodsworth College, and the University of Toronto population. The incumbent provides community outreach by working closely with an Assistant Professor to develop educational initiatives related to storytelling tours of the city of Toronto focused on urban land-based Indigenous Knowledge in Toronto. The incumbent will also participate in student development activities.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Building and strengthening relationships with the Indigenous stakeholders and partners of strategic importance. Developing and implementing community engagement strategies and plans
  • Keeping well-informed on theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Probing for information from students with personal and/or academic difficulties and making appropriate referrals
  • Promoting experiential learning opportunities. Facilitating educational workshops and seminars; Liaising with internal and external contacts to coordinate execution of seminars and workshops.
  • Developing content for instructional workshops
  • Providing advice and support to students and mentors on program delivery matters
  • Directing the activities of casual staff


Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum four years of recent and relevant experience building relationships with Indigenous stakeholders and students, with one year experience in a indigenous and community outreach role in a University college.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students
  • Experience helping Indigenous students navigating University studies; Experience leading first story tours
  • Experience planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Experience providing advice and support to students and mentors on program delivery matters
  • Experience storytelling to teach values, beliefs, morals, history, and life skills in Indigenous communities
  • Experience engaging respectfully with diverse and/ormarginalized communities
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations, especially with Indigenous population
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating group programming and individualized learning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent skills as a presenter, facilitator, and communicator with ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, and members of the external community
  • Able to use inclusive approaches to develop and cultivate relationships with students, faculty, staff, and members of the external community
