Industrial Hygiene (IH) Technician- Onsite Job at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
· Perform physical, biological and chemical hazard assessments in ERM and ensure compliance with relevant procedures, programs, standards and/or regulations.
· Perform IH related field sampling and testing of physical, biological and chemical stressors including but not limited to: asbestos, silica, lead, mercury, mould, noise, non-ionizing radiation, and extreme temperature.
· Recommend, implement and monitor required engineering controls, work practice, personal protective equipment and respirators to eliminate or reduce physical, biological and chemical exposures with the support and direction of ERM Certified Industrial Hygienist/Director HSSE&Q.
· Perform Confined Space Initial Hazard Assessments/Confined Space Entry Surveys and ensure surveys comply with the relevant analytical and interpretation documentation.
· Arrange and/or perform compressor and breathing air quality surveys (direct reading instruments and analytical techniques), and ventilation surveys including fume hood testing.
· Provide line managers and employees with survey reports indicating the results, field observations and recommendations (control measures, personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protection needs if relevant)
· Provide the Certified Industrial Hygienist with IH monitoring data, work plans, and reports for interpretation or in order to access necessary controls and take further action.
· Provide additional support to ERM facilities on IH related matters as required under the direction of the ERM CIH/Director HSSE&Q.
· Liaise with ERM internal customers and contractors to ensure IH needs are addressed and met.
· Support the implementation of CNL and ERM IH policies, programs and procedures.
· Assist in the development and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets, chemical Inventories and exposure databases.
· Operate and maintain IH sampling equipment including calibration, service and repair.
· Develop communications, conduct training sessions and deliver presentations on IH-related subjects.
· Support Integrated Work Control, including JHAs, risk reviews, work plans and permits.
· Serve as the IH SME for designated topics.
· Participate in inspections, audits and program reviews.
· Compile summary information for internal reports.
· Conduct research as assigned.
· Collaborate effectively with other IH and OSH personnel.
· Participate in internal and external training courses as required as per ERM IH Tech Training Plan.
· Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology or equivalent formal education in a field relevant to the position (i.e. - industrial hygiene, occupational health, environment science, biology or chemistry)
· Secondary School Graduation diploma or equivalent and has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training
· Preferable to have at least three years’ work experience in industrial hygiene field operations or a combination of experiences and IH related training/education.
· Good oral and written communication skills.
· Ability to prioritize work assignments
· Demonstrated interpersonal, communication (active listening, oral expression/comprehension) and training/presentation skills ;
· Physically fit, able to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 7.5 hrs a day. Able to manage stairs, ladders and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas including confined space. Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator;
· Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service.
· Familiarity of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
· Able to work independently and as part of a team to complete assigned work
· Oral communication, expressing ideas and opinions clearly and effectively.
· Ability to manage duties through efficient planning, time management, detail orientation and prioritization.
· Ability to engage audience through presentation skills.
· Must be able to successfully complete ERM IH Tech Training Plan
· Will be required to take CNL Radiation Protection Group 3 training.
· Demonstrates “safety first” attitude and ensures activities are conducted with CNL, public and employee safety foremost in mind.
· Will be required to function in an integrated work control team environment.
· Intermediate skills and experience writing technical and investigation reports
· Ability to maintain and grow safety knowledge including industry best practices and pending changes in legislation;
· Working level knowledge of occupational health & safety legislation relating to general operational system, construction, waste operations, environment remediation and demolition environments.
· Experience and working knowledge of specific federal (CLC) and provincial legislation (Ontario) that affects occupational health and safety within CNL.
· Knowledge of the CNL OSH Program would be considered an asset.
· A working knowledge of radiation protection principles would be an asset.
· Candidate must be physically fit, able to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 7.5 hrs a day.

· Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator
· Working Environment:
· Field work is a cornerstone activity in this role.
· This role will have occasion travel to other ERM sites
· This role will involve travel between Deep River and Chalk River sites.
