The Plant and Animal Health Branch provides veterinary diagnostic laboratory and disease investigation services for the Province. The Animal Health Centre is the provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory and, as a major part of the Plant and Animal Health Branch, has the mandate to provide diagnostic, monitoring, investigative, surveillance and regulatory programs for livestock, poultry and finfish production industries of British Columbia.

This position is responsible for daily diagnostic works in the bacteriology laboratory section including isolating and identifying a wide range of bacteria and fungi from numerous animal species and environmental samples, coordinating and prioritizing daily diagnostic work and laboratory duties as a team or independently and undertaking quality assurance according to the AAVLD and ISO 17025 standards within bacteriology section. This position is also responsible for developing new testing procedures, writing SOP’s and exploring new diagnostic tools and techniques.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 2-year diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or Microbiology; preference may be given to applicants with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Microbiology or Medical Laboratory Sciences Program.
  • One year experience in diagnostic microbiology, preferably in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • Experience performing diagnostic activities in a Microbiology laboratory – identification of bacterial and mycotic agents; performance of antimicrobial resistance testing and performance of molecular biological techniques.
  • Maintains American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) certification through participation in periodic internal and external proficiency test panels for quality assurance purposes.

Willingness Statements:

  • Must be willing to participate in the PAHB rabies vaccination and surveillance program
  • Meets safety standards of Work Safe BC including WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Containment Level 3 (CL3) Laboratory Biosafety training.
