LIVE-IN WEEKEND SUPPORT WORKER – Wetaskiwin, AB

Program overview: Serenity House is dedicated to providing a supported transitional living program for adults with a mental health diagnosis to support them in learning or strengthening life and social skills towards gaining more independence in their community. We are looking for a positive, professional individual who has a passion for working hands on with these vulnerable adults to support them in gaining life/social skills development through role modelling, in the moment teaching and various activities.

Position overview: This position is a live-in weekend position with the hours of work being: Friday – awake 4:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., sleep 10:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.; Saturday/Sunday – awake 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m., sleep 12:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.

Staff must have the capability and flexibility to handle and juggle a broad array of duties and demands such as:

· Provide supervision, role modelling, and assistance as necessary in daily housecleaning, menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking duties;

· Monitor and report on the individual’s served condition, including monitoring psychiatric symptoms, medication compliance and gaging the individual’s served readiness to live as independent as possible in the community;

· Assist the residents in orientation to the Group Home and settling into their new home;

· Life skills teaching such as: budgeting, meal planning and prep, house chores, accessing community resources, etc.;

· Distribute medications to the residents as required;

· Participate in cleaning and general upkeep of Serenity House;

· Perform additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director of Community Services and/or Manager of Adult Mental Health Programs.

The ideal candidate will possess:

· Good understanding of adult mental health issues;

· Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, customs and beliefs;

· Good understanding and acceptance of cultural differences and how they can impact treatment approaches;

· Good communication skills with proven organizational and documentation skills;

· Able to work well in a team environment or independently with the ability to handle stressful situations in a non-confrontational, problem solving manner is required;

· Comfortable driving in urban and rural settings to facilitate transportation to meetings or appointments;

· Strong client relationship skills (ability to get along with all personality types) and demonstrates a friendly, vibrant, sociable and understanding personality;

· Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice preferred.

Qualifications/Experience: High school graduate; post-secondary education in the health, social sciences field, or human services is preferred (if education is in Social Work, must be registered Social Worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers applicable). Experience working with adults with serious or persistent mental health disorders and substance abuse is required.

Other Requirements: A clear Police Information Check with vulnerable sector and a Child Intervention Record Check, both dated within the last 6 months. A valid AB driver’s licence (minimum class 5), current driver's abstract (no more than 8 demerits) and a reliable vehicle to use for work purposes.

Salary & Benefits: Salary will be $35,979.00 annually. 3-weeks’ vacation accrual to start with an additional week added after 2 years. We provide full-time employees with a 100% employer paid health benefits package (which includes vision, dental and prescription drug coverage, massage therapy, etc.) and a 100% employer paid RRSP equaling 3% of annual salary. We also offer free courses and workshops in-house for all of our employees.
