Job Description


Public Markets Operations performs functions that are integral to the end to end transaction processes that support CPP Investments’ in public markets. The Managing Director, Public Markets Middle Office will be a senior member of the Operations management team, primarily responsible for continuing to establish a best-in-class middle office function, initially with a focus on public markets, with a strategy to be developed for future state support of private markets. The role will report to the Managing Director, Head of Operations, Global Leadership Team, and will continue the implementation for the new function, looking at opportunities focused on streamlining and improving current process and support by better aligning functions that drive trading support and post trade analysis to allow for a more scalable and flexible organization.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Continue the strategic roll out for a middle office function that will provide transactional support initially for both the public markets, with a view to extending to private investment businesses as applicable.
  • Oversight and responsibility for investment services (including account & product setup and maintenance, counterparty onboarding and maintenance) and trade lifecycle management (trade capture, affirmations, resets, issues/exceptions, corporate action processing, EOD pricing, etc.).
  • Working with investment departments to identify and transition duplicative functions in order to free up investors’ time to focus on investment/portfolio decisions.
  • Align with the investment departments to ensure global coverage aligned with the goals of each department for a global trading team.
  • Overseeing, measuring, and managing overall risk for the new middle office in an environment with significant daily trading volumes.
  • Consistently identifying sources of complexity and recommending technology enabled/process enhancement solutions that are long term and scalable.
  • Building strong relationships with investment departments to support investment strategies while also ensuring the overall function maintains integrity and controls.
  • Building partnerships with the Technology & Data Department to ensure support and synergies/efficiencies.
  • Leading the development of a high performing team.

Qualifications


The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strategic mindset and proven ability to build and shape a long-term approach to group success while taking an enterprise level view.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive organizational changes to optimize the global operational support needs and manage performance of Operations teams, setting clear priorities and expectations as well as providing direction and support
  • A track record of optimizing the value delivered by their group or department through the thoughtful allocation of resources to high priority areas.
  • A history of attracting top-tier talent to build a diverse team of leaders.
  • The ability to develop targeted metrics/KPIs that tracks key success measures across both internal processes and external relationships with key vendors
  • Is recognized as an innovative and collaborative thought leader who drives productive change that delivers tangible business value.
  • The ability to communicate, influence and engage with peers, senior leadership, and business partners.
  • Demonstrated experience building, overseeing, leading, coaching and developing high performing teams (e.g. recruiting, training, mentoring, etc.)
  • Superior interpersonal skills; clear and proven communication skills (oral and written) as well as exceptional presentation skills

Specific experience, qualifications and areas of expertise should include:

  • 10+ years of experience ranging from development to oversight of operations processes and controls for a multi asset public markets business across a broad spectrum of products including, but not limited to, equities, fixed income, derivatives, foreign exchange and money markets
  • Thorough understanding of the issues relevant to a multi-asset class portfolio management business, such as the use of derivatives, trade settlement (globally, including emerging markets), securities lending, implementation of new products and strategies, and their related operational management requirements.
  • Proven history of scaling operations through the “smart” use of technology and process simplification.
  • Possess a strong client service orientation and exceptional relationship skills.
  • Excellent and demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to think through problems and recommend solutions.
  • Experience with trade capture & settlement systems is an asset.
  • An undergraduate/advanced degree in business or economics is expected. A professional designation such as a CFA is highly valued. A CA/CMA/CPA is an asset, but not required.
