CME Ltd. West Coast Division is currently seeking an experienced Marine Electrician to join our team in Port Alberni, British Columbia. The Marine Electrician is responsible for the installation of electrical components/systems on vessels in a safe, tidy and consistent manner.

Job Description:

This position will primarily involve the new construction of vessels built to customer specifications and regulated by Transport Canada under the small vessel regulations. Vessels includes small commercial vessels such as landing crafts, workboats, tugs, fishing vessels and passenger vessels. Day to day shipyard work will include troubleshooting, repairs, modifications to small vessel electrical system as well as testing, ordering materials and writing reports.

  • Read and interpret drawings, schematics and electrical specifications to determine layout of electrical equipment installation
  • Interpret and red-line drawings/ submit RFI’s based on inconsistencies, wiring errors, and code/standards violations.
  • Mark-up and submit as-built drawings
  • Install, maintain and commission marine electrical equipment including shore-power, galvanic isolators, transformers, and off the shelf power distribution equipment
  • Install, tests and commission generators and power electronics
  • Install, maintain and commission marine navigation electronics such as radar, depth sounders, multi-function displays, NMEA0183 and 2k, coaxial cables and antennas, GPS, AIS.
  • Install and commission engine control electronics and actuators
  • Calculate loading and capacity of batteries.
  • Calculate requirements and select battery inverter/chargers.
  • Build and install cable tray. Work closely with fabricators to custom build mounts.
  • Layout and install cable transits and glands.
  • Layout and build wheelhouse console panels including displays, metering, switching.
  • Layout and build 12/24/36V lighting systems.
  • Select and install cables based on specifications, standards, drawings, ampacity and voltage drop
  • Perform insulation resistance testing on ship wiring and write reports based on findings.
  • Source parts based on specifications, standards and requirements. Submit orders.

Essential qualifications:

Education (one of the following):

  • Electrical trade qualification with Red Seal.
  • Electronics or electrical technician or technologist with controls, automation, or marine experience
  • Marine wiring technician/rigger with ABYC electrical certification and extensive experience
  • Electrical apprentices with suitable marine wiring experience.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience rigging small or large vessel electrical in a boatyard/shipyard in addition to time spent during apprenticeship or other electrical work experience.
  • 2+ years of commercial or industrial service work/commissioning/testing/maintenance in addition to time spent during apprenticeship or other electrical work experience.
  • Apprentices: 1+ year of marine related electrical work.

Asset qualifications (nice to have)

  • Marine electrician endorsement
  • ABYC electrical certificate
  • Extensive experience applying Transport Canada TP1332E, TP127 and or ABYC E-11 standards.
  • Configuring, troubleshooting, wiring industrial control panels
  • Electrical maintenance experience: troubleshooting, modifying circuits
  • Extensive shipyard wiring experience including maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Experience drawing/modifying electrical schematics and panels/layout in AutoCad or similar software
