Reporting to the Manager, Diagnostic Imaging, the Technologist provides general radiological, mammography and Computed Tomography (CT) responsibilities. These are performed with adherence to the Code of Ethics and the Standard of Practice of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologist (CAMRT) and the Canadian Association of Radiologist (CAR). The Technologist takes charge of patients and performs a variety of diagnostic or therapeutic procedures for clinical purposes. The incumbent is available as a resource to the nurses and basic radiographers in the Community Health Centers.

The Technologist is instrumental in providing services to the Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH) and Territory of Nunavut. This position fulfills all general radiology, mammography and CR requirements by using a variety of equipment. Holter Monitor, cardiac Event Recorder and electrocardiogram services are also provided at the QGH and the Territory. The Technologist consults with the physicians and other medical staff as well as providing radiological technical expertise and support to the nursing staff on the outlying committees. The position impacts on the excellence of patient care, treatment and diagnosis provided by the health care team. Services required outside the department’s service hours are covered on an “on-call” (standby) basis shared by the staff Technologist. Staff is expected to take turns in the rotating schedule (day, evening, weekends) to ensure coverage for the department. The Technologist is also required to assist physicians in imaging procedures that may be diagnostic or therapeutic in natures. To fulfill this function, the Technologist will perform nursing care duties and imaging procedures that involve the whole patient. These duties include monitoring the patient’s vital signs as required and monitoring the patient for any adverse reaction.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a successful completion of a three (3) year accredited and recognized college program in the discipline of medical radiological technology OR successful completion of a degree in medical radiation technology. Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologist (CMRT) Mammography Level 1 and Level 2 or equivalent are also required. The incumbent will obtain continuing education credits to maintain accreditation standards. Specialized on-site training at an accredited Breast Imaging Centre is also required along with CT Imaging Certificate from CAMRT and Intravenous (IV) Therapy Certificate. The Technologist must be a current registered member in good standing with the CAMRT and must have annual certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Two (2) years of post-graduate experience practicing mammography is also required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official

languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
