POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Warmland Services, Outreach Support Workers operate as a team within the Shelter and out in the community to provide client services for homeless and other marginalized individuals, and to help them connect with other community services and health agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications include certificate or degree in a mental health and/or addictions related field; minimum 2 years of experience working with people who experience homelessness; life experience may be considered in part for related experience; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience relevant to the level of work; a valid BC driver’s license (Copy of driver’s licence and abstract required); standard First Aid & CPR (Required); non-Violence Crisis
Intervention Training (Required); naloxone Training (Preferred); trauma informed practice (Preferred)

Candidates are required to submit an ICBC Driver Factor Report to be reviewed at the time of the interview.

POSITION DETAILS

This is a permanent full-time Union Position. The hours of work are 7 am – 3 pm (37.5 Hours per week) working from

Monday to Friday with weekends off. The rate of pay is $27.17 per hour (Pay Grid 21). The position offers an attractive

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Providing services in the Cowichan Valley since 1992, Canadian Mental Health Association - Cowichan Valley

Branch (CMHA-CVB) is a registered charity and not-for-profit, independent society operating under a branch division agreement with CMHA British Columbia and within the context of the nation-wide Strategic Plan of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

As part of a national organization and an advocate of mental health for all, CMHA-CVB facilitates access to resources people need to maintain and improve mental health and wellbeing, and to participate in community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness and/or substance use and addiction.

CMHA-CVB operates Warmland House Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing Services, Sobering and

Assessment Centre, Adult Outreach programs, a Youth Centre, Youth Connect, Bounce Back personal coaching,

Family Capacity Program, Rainbows and a variety of other counselling/therapeutic programs for children, youth, and families.

CMHA-CVB also provides community education and advocacy aimed at the promotion of good mental health and in support of individuals and families with mental health challenges.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager, Warmland Services, Outreach Support Workers operate as a team within the Shelter and out in the community to provide client services for homeless and other marginalized individuals, and to help them connect with other community services and health agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Establish and maintain a rapport with clients in community and at the Shelter
● Provide clients with information regarding other available services in the Cowichan Valley
● Locate people who are in need of support services and who otherwise may not seek assistance
● Work with client support networks to facilitate successful independent living
● Engage with unsheltered individuals to assist with finding rental units or attending appointments (medical, counselling, etc.) within the Cowichan community
● Maintain excellent relations with health and social service professionals with the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, Canada Revenue Agency, Ministry for Mental Health & Addictions, Island Health, BC
Housing, RCMP, other non-profit and community agencies service providers

● Provide client support in the areas of daily living, financial, health, social supports and resource acquisition
● Network with and maintain positive relationships with landlords of private and CMHA-CVB-operated affordable and transitional housing, keeping up to date on availability of long term housing in the greater community
● Maintain accurate, up to date and appropriate records and ensure all data is current and captured in relevant databases
● Complete and maintain case notes, daily intakes and relevant client information
● Complete agency required staffing forms such as time sheets, leave requests and expense claims, vehicle logs, etc.
● Perform other related duties as required and requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

● Knowledge of housing and advocacy issues facing persons with a psychiatric disability or other challenges
● Knowledge of community resources
● Knowledge of systemic challenges faced by clients
● Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation practices
● Demonstrated knowledge of cultural competency and anti-racist practices
● Good understanding of mental illness and psychotropic medications
● Ability to work with individuals with barriers to maintaining housing
● Experience in harm reduction approach
● Knowledge of mental illness and resources, as well as deep understanding of trauma, addictions and support resources available
● Strong advocacy skills
● Understanding of Ministry of Social Development processes and procedures
● Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
● Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
● Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
● Ability to organize and prioritize
● Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
● Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients
● Good organizational and leadership skills
● Computer Proficiency, including email, Word, Excel
