Pharmacy Assistant

Pharmaceutical Distribution

1. Gather information to create and maintain the accuracy and completeness of patient records.

2. Assess prescriptions for clarity, completeness, authenticity, and compliance with legal requirements.

3. Interpret prescriptions, perform any required calculations, and ensure the prescription information is recorded accurately on the patient record.

4. Refer to the Pharmacist patients that require clinical assessment, analysis or application of the Pharmacist’s knowledge.

5. Receive and transcribe new verbal prescriptions from prescribers.

6. Transfer and receive prescriptions from other pharmacies.

7. Select, prepare, package, and label prescriptions for both commercially available products and extemporaneous compounds as outlined by policies and procedures.

8. Perform accurate prescription adjudication and manage coverage related issues in cooperation with the patient and Pharmacist.

9. Complete appropriate documentation for all the tasks including but not limited to filling prescriptions and filing procedures.

10. Understand and adhere to the quality assurance policies/procedures for job performance management, medication error risk management and narcotic/controlled substances.

11. Maintain the confidential and sensitive nature of the pharmacy/patient relationship at all times in accordance with legislation and standards.

12. Check the prescriptions for completeness and accuracy if dispensed by self or a Pharmacy Assistant; and/or ensure that it has been checked prior to being handed over to the Pharmacist or distributed to the patient.

13. Ensure that a Pharmacist has reviewed the appropriateness of a prescription prior to release.

14. Enter and process sale of prescription and other purchases using the POS cash register.

15. Perform other duties assigned; as required, to ensure efficient operations of the pharmacy.

Additional Pharmacy Administration Responsibilities

1. Maintain inventory requirements sufficient for patient safety and efficient operations.

2. Coordinate the monitoring and removal of expired medications in accordance with provincial legislation.

3. Conduct inventory spot checks for accuracy, and manage out-of-stocks in accordance with stores policies and procedures.

4. Ensure that the dispensary is tidy and organized including the prescription section, waiting area, and counselling areas. Ensure supplies are checked, restocked and rotated, and ordered as necessary.

5. Ensure health information pamphlets are organized, updated, and reordered as required for daily use and for any planned clinics or seminars.

6. Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required to maintain efficient workflow within the dispensary and professional areas of the pharmacy.

7. Operate POS according to store policy, verifying customer receipts and issuing receipts.

8. Reconcile cash float at the beginning and end of shift as required.

9. If closing, reconcile total tender (cash, debit, credit, gifts cards) to POS sales date and file “end-of-day cash envelope”.

10. Process merchandise returns or refunds in an efficient manner in accordance with store policies.

11. Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Grade 12 graduation. Certificate from appropriate Community College and provincial College of Pharmacy.
  • Product and supplier knowledge preferred.
  • Previous experience in community pharmacy (front store or dispensary) is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the federal and provincial legislation regarding the filling and dispensing of prescriptions.
  • Organization, self-motivation, effective communication, attention to detail, and customer service skills are necessary.
  • Enthusiastic, flexible, conscientious, logical, precise, patient, objective, responsible, positive attitude, cooperative, team-oriented, and friendly.
  • Some retail or cash handling experience preferred.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $16.00-$25.00 per hour
