Department/Unit Summary:


3A CSU is a Regional Integrated Stroke Unit that provides acute and rehab care to stroke patients. Our staff provide lifesaving treatment (TPA and EVT (mechanical clot retrieval)) for those afflicted with stroke. 3A is a 52 bed Unit (32 acute beds and 20 rehab beds). As a Regional Stroke Centre we receive stroke bypass from the following hospitals: CVH, Etobicoke, Brampton, Oakville, Georgetown, Milton, Orangeville, Humber and St. Joseph.

3A CSU is supported by an inter-disciplinary team of RNs and RPNs, CQCL, Charge Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, OTA/PTA, Speech Language Pathologists, Discharge Planners, Dieticians, 3 Stroke Internists, Subacute hospitalists and a Neurologist. In partnership with the West GTA Stroke Network, the team provides exceptional, patient-centred care in a collaborative and integrated manner. As a part of an academic centre, our team participates in ongoing research, quality improvement and professional development initiatives.


Key Qualifications:


  • Current general certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • 1 – 3 years recent experience in Stroke/Neuro and Rehab Nursing is preferred.
  • Current BCLS.
  • Acute care experience.
  • Knowledge of complex medical and cardiac conditions an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional education in Neuroscience nursing an asset.
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Critical thinking and leadership skills.
  • Reliable, flexible, creative, self-directed professional able to work effectively and collaboratively in a “care pair” as well as with a high performance interdisciplinary rehab team.


Position Summary:


  • Responsible and accountable for decisions and actions in the provision and management of nursing care for patients.
  • Provides nursing assessment, contributes to care plan development, goal oriented treatment interventions, patient and family education and support to address medical, cognitive, emotional and self-care needs.
  • Contributes to the development of a realistic discharge plan.
  • Perform as a coach/mentor/consultant and to use sound critical thinking skills, which are key to achieving patient outcomes and facilitating team function.
  • Participate in program planning, continuous quality improvement and evaluation.
