The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description
Alberta reliability standards (ARS) are the requirements followed by the AESO and Alberta market participants to provide for the safe and reliable operation of the Alberta interconnected electric system (AIES). AESO recommends the adoption of ARS that are based on the reliability standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) as well as other ARS that amend, supplement or replace NERC standards. The adoption of ARS that are consistent with NERC reliability standards allows for the reliable operation of the AIES and increases reliability of the whole North American grid.
We are looking for an engineer or analyst to coordinate and guide cross-functional teams to develop ARS for Alberta’s electricity industry. This is a great opportunity for a professional with broad knowledge of high voltage facilities, transmission system operations, and/or protection & control systems to lead stakeholder engagements with external industry working groups to develop technical requirements to ensure success for our collective industry.
Key accountabilities
  • Keep informed and provide updates of NERC’s Reliability Standards development including Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards;
  • Lead the development of ARS, including:
    • Establish and facilitate internal and external working groups
    • Draft ARS and consultation material
    • Coordinate the consultation process
  • Participate in North American electricity industry sector standards discussions
  • Provide support, as needed, through the implementation and compliance monitoring phases of Alberta reliability standards
  • Support other regulatory programs such as ISO Rules and Revenue Metering Program as required

  • At least five years of experience as an electrical industry professional working with transmission system asset management, facilities design, real-time operations, or regulatory compliance monitoring
  • Demonstrated aptitude in internal and relationship building, group facilitation and stakeholder engagement experience. The ability to guide large engagements to acceptance of a decision in a variety of environments ranging from collaborative to oppositional is essential
  • Applied use of project and program management and administration tools, including understanding of cost impact with regulatory requirements
  • Working knowledge of electricity industry rules and standards, compliance monitoring and audit process
