About Us



Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) is part of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and has the mandated responsibility to operate, maintain and keep safe the provincially owned water infrastructure. The Branch is made up of multidisciplinary teams including Operation, Maintenance, Safety, Capital Replacement/Rehabilitation, Alberta Dam and Canal Safety, Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring and Land Management administration. WIOB is Province wide with office locations in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Peace River as well as several field offices at major infrastructure like the St Mary Dam, Oldman River Dam and Dickson Dam.

Role

Are you a creative and highly motivated Civil Engineering Technologist seeking a role with increased responsibilities in infrastructure maintenance and project management?

The Senior Geomatics & Infrastructure Technologist position provides support to the Southern Operations workgroup for civil construction and projects related to water management infrastructure. The Southern Operations workgroup is part of Agriculture and Irrigation Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) and is located in Lethbridge. This role reports to the Oldman Basin Infrastructure Engineer.

The main focus of this role is the inspection and assessment of dams, canals and water control structures to identify maintenance requirements and provide solutions for the infrastructure maintenance program. Role responsibilities also include the reviewing of designs and oversight of construction progress on a wide range of civil projects. Other duties include: the collection and review of instrumentation data, the management of maintenance contractors and contracts, and the maintenance of technical data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines for Southern Operations.

The Southern Operations workgroup manages $6.5 billion of water management infrastructure owned and operated by the Government of Alberta. This infrastructure provides a secured and sustainable water supply for Albertans in the sectors of irrigation, industry, municipalities and also provides recreational opportunities while ensuring the environment is protected for future generations.

You will be required to work independently and also as a resource for multi-discipline teams. Strong leadership skills are a core job requirement respect to maintaining networks, stakeholder relations and working with external consultants

Responsibilities of the Senior Geomatics & Infrastructure Technologist include:

  • Inspecting and assessing water infrastructure, identifying maintenance and dam safety requirements, and preparing inspection reports.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of emergency documents like Emergency Preparedness and Emergency Response Plans
  • Project and Contract Management and some Contractor Supervision.
  • Providing technical support services like providing general design requirements, review of specifications. Some limited AutoCAD civil design and drafting, GIS analysis.
  • Supporting business planning functions, setting workgroup priorities and maintaining technical data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines.

Qualifications

Two (2) year technical diploma in in the field of Engineering or Applied Science and a minimum of six (6) years related experience in the field of Civil Engineering technology or Geomatics Engineering technology.

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets:

  • Registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist with the Association of Science and Engineering Technologists (ASET) of Alberta
  • Skilled in application of specialized Engineering software applications, ArcGIS and AutoCAD
  • Ability to inspect, assess and identify structural or operational problems with embankment dam, canal and other hydraulic structures
  • Familiar with the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive.
  • Project Management knowledge and skills
  • Experience with inspection, maintenance and/or construction of water management infrastructure.


Preference will be given to those with registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist with the Association of Science and Engineering Technologists (ASET) of Alberta

Salary

$2,654.45 to $3,485.57 bi-weekly. ($69,281 - $90,973 / year)

  • Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm)
