BCIT’s School of Transportation is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE ), Shop Maintenance Technician. This position responds to requests and trouble calls, completes work orders and provides quality service to the Heavy Equipment, Commercial Transport, Railway and Industrial Material Handling Logistics staff and students. Operates and maintains a variety of wheeled, railway and tracked equipment, carries out scheduled inspections, maintenance and repairs to machinery, equipment, and the railway lab. Coordinates the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) program, makes emergency repairs to a variety of equipment, and identifies requirements to outsource to external vendors.Takes functional direction from the Department Heads and Workshop Tool room Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Responds to work requests and trouble calls, identifies problems and takes corrective action to fix machinery and equipment including preliminary troubleshooting on a variety of machines and equipment, including alternator testers, starter testers, battery load testers, refrigeration units, electrical training aids, hydraulic training aids and components, and driveline training aids and components.
  • Operates, moves, or removes old machinery and equipment, adapts older machinery and equipment to new components and parts, relocates machinery and equipment, and installs and commissions new machinery and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of tracked, wheeled and railway equipment to a high degree of safety within compounds and on campus property. Equipment includes; Trucks, Railcar Mover, and Heavy Duty machines.
  • Repairs and maintains forklifts.
  • Recommends priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance Plan, including items that require inspection and maintenance for regulatory reasons. The Preventative Maintenance Plan duties include but are not limited to: inspecting, cleaning, greasing, lubricating, identifying deficiencies, and taking corrective action and reporting findings to supervisor.
  • Performs regular inspections on locomotive, rail car mover, tracks and freight cars.
  • Performs regular railyard maintenance, duties include but not limited to switch maintenance, track maintenance, vegetation control, ensuring proper signage is in place.
  • Maintains work logs and inspection records as required to meet regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains technical information and makes recommendations to Department Head and Associate Dean with respect to equipment upgrades.
  • Monitors/maintains oil stores room and determines parts/equipment requirements to effect repairs, sources suppliers, orders parts/supplies.
  • Monitors/maintains steam clean area, and battery room as required.
  • Maintains acceptable levels of: diesel fuel, propane, welding gases, waste oil, antifreeze, scrap metal bin loading, wood bins etc.
  • Maintains the work and shop areas in an organized condition; consults with instructors for student involvement in clean up procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Maintains an inventory of shop supplies, and ordering / restocking as required.
  • Maintains battery carts and charging stations throughout shop areas.
  • Maintains engine and chassis dynamometer labs to be fully operational.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS :

Education:
  • Grade 12 plus completion of two years post-secondary education in a relevant trades program.


License(s)/Certifications(s):
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence
  • Forklift Operators certification
  • Certified in propane cylinder filing
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete and maintain currency in the following courses/training:
  • Track Inspection Training
  • Industrial Railway (non-main track) Crew Safety Training

Experience:
  • Two years general experience plus two years directly related experience working with, and around, mechanical and/or large, heavy duty or railway equipment
  • Experience in operating heavy equipment and overhead cranes
  • Lead hand, shift supervisor or shop coordinator experience is required

Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
  • Basic computer training and experience in MS Office including Word and Excel
  • Internet and email experience

Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Proven high level of customer service with internal and external customers/vendors

Administrative Skills
  • Keyboarding skills are required
  • Ability to organize workload and assignments, meet deadlines and handle changing priorities
  • Experience with completing documents and maintaining accurate records both manually and in electronic format

Other Skills/Abilities:
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a busy, demanding environment
  • Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learning on the job is essential
  • Ability to operate a variety of tracked, wheeled and railway equipment
  • Must be able to handle physical activities associated with a busy shop environment
  • The ability to lift and carry heavy loads within guidelines of WorkSafeBC

Salary Range
Salary Grade 8: $54,753 - $59,521 per annum.

Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
