Job Summary

A multi-faceted role in an advanced technical environment

The Ministry of Forests is responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land and natural resources, and protection of B.C.’s archaeological and heritage resources. Overseeing a land base of 94.8 million hectares, the Ministry supports the sustainable management of forest, mineral and land resources, the prosperity, viability and competitiveness of industries that use them, and public access for a wide range of activities such as hunting, fishing and recreation. The Ministry is responsible for policy development, operational management and implementation, and oversees over 60 statutes and associated regulations.

The GIS Analyst conducts advanced spatial data analysis in support of program and management decision making on resource planning, land management or other program issues. This position contributes to building the capabilities of ministry staff to maximize the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies through the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of standards, procedures and methods for collection, integration, maintenance, analysis, storage and distribution of digital corporate data. Outputs from this position are used for development of science-based policy, standards and guidelines for natural resource management, and informed strategic planning and decision-making regarding forest management activities.

The wildfire rehabilitation GIS Analyst will support the 100 Mile House District wildfire rehabilitation team with planning, consultative and operational mapping needs, advanced spatial data analyses and outputs to facilitate collaborative management and consultation processes, and management of large datasets.

They will additionally support the Provincial wildfire rehabilitation team by updating the Rehab Hub to include an easier user interface, transitioning the Rehab Hub over to ArcPro, assisting with training and development of new GIS staff and assisting with training and guidance to rehab practitioners on Provincial standards and processes. They will also be expected to provide networking and collaboration opportunities between BCWS GIS staff and rehab GIS staff, support underserved areas in the Province with geospatial products and services, prepare FOI info packages as needed, and support accurate record keeping to ensure Provincial statistics are properly documented and easily communicated with partners, stakeholders, and the public.

Job Requirements:

  • A degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Computer Science, Resource Management, or related field; OR
  • Technical Diploma in GIS and 1 year of relevant experience (gained within the last 5 years); OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and related experience (gained within the last 5 years) may be considered.

    • Relevant experience must include:
    • Experience in managing and implementing geospatial projects, providing geospatial solutions and delivering complex analysis projects in support of clients’ business needs.
    • Experience consulting or providing expert geospatial advice to non-technical people (clients, decision makers, technical and professional staff) and in ensuring the provision of technical products that meet the needs of natural resource clients and users.
  • Minimum of one (1) year’s experience using ESRI ArcGIS 10.x for spatial analysis, cartography, and data management


Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Recent wildfire rehabilitation experience (gained within the last 3 to 7 years)
  • Experience developing web-mapping applications using ArcGIS Online, JavaScript, or HTML5.
  • Experience in automating GIS workflows using python scripting.
  • GIS experience supporting operational forestry.
  • Experience with web mapping services (e.g ArcGIS Online).
  • Experience with ArcPro, scripting, and development of Esri web based platforms.
