STEM Canada is a regional STEM program open to all students with the mission to deliver top-notch STEM literacy and applications. The STEM program educates students from preschool to high school.

SMAC specializes in an advanced, bar-none STEM-based educational curriculum that emphasizes the interconnected subject areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

As a partner in a summer program in the city, STEM Canada is seeking qualified teachers who actively work with kids during the school year to assist with the program management of our summer program at York University.

As a Summer Program Teacher Mentor and Counsellor, you will play a critical role in creating a positive and safe living environment for students attending our summer programing. You will be responsible for promoting a sense of community, providing support and guidance to students, and ensuring adherence to our organizations, our program and the university policies and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a resource for students by providing program direction, guidance, support, and academic direction requirements.
  • Supervise tours, team building activities, and mentorship services to students aged 10 – 17.
  • Assist in programming planning, management and execution of the program overall - in 1 week intervals from Monday to Friday.
  • Attend outings and provide management of the programming schedule.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out processes, including room inspections and inventory checks.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment by planning and facilitating events, activities, and programs that promote community building and student engagement.
  • Respond to student needs and concerns, including after-hours emergencies, and work with appropriate program staff to address issues as needed.
  • Enforce program policies and regulations related to program participation, dormitory living, including maintaining a safe and secure living environment and ensuring adherence to noise and visitation policies.
  • Monitor the physical condition of the dorm rooms and report issues as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Resident Assistants and program staff to develop and implement initiatives that enhance the overall student experience.

Requirements:

  • Desire to teach, mentor shape the lives of students ages 10 - 17 through STEM related activities
  • Work with children as an OCT throughout the school year.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must successfully pass a background check, vulnerable sector police clearance check mandatory, along with first aid certification.

Compensation:
$22.87 per hour

The program is scheduled to begin on July 3 in weekly intervals until August 11, 2023.

Several shifts available:

Part Time: 20 - 24 hours per week
- 6 am - 10:30 am
- 10:30 am - 3pm
- 3pm - 7: 30 pm
- 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm
- 11 pm - 3: 30 am - night shift (overnight dorm supervision)
- 3: 30 am - 6:30 am - night shift (overnight dorm supervision)

Full Time: 37.5 - 40 hours per week
- 6 am - 3pm (breakfast, lunch, programming management)
- 2pm - 11pm (afternoon shift - outings, dinner, team building)
- 10 pm - 7 am - night shift (overnight dorm supervision)
Monday to Friday 8 hours shifts with a 1 hour lunch.

All meals and room and board at the university residence included if needed and available according to shift acquired.
