Transit Operator - CASUAL Job at The City of Red Deer

Function/Purpose:

The Transit Department is looking for two (2) Casual Transit Bus Operators - reliable and responsible individuals who can provide public transit services enabling residents to have access to work, education, healthcare, shopping and recreational opportunities in Red Deer. Bus Operators are experienced and knowledgeable drivers with a strong commitment to customer service who transport passengers in a safe and courteous manner on prescribed scheduled routes and on chartered services and tours. They operate buses safely and competently in a variety of driving conditions, ensure that an appropriate fare is deposited, and collect and issue transfers. Bus Operators work constantly in the public eye and must always maintain a positive and professional attitude.

Job Requirements:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of commercial driving experience is desirable
  • Must hold a minimum of a Class 2 Alberta Operators License with a Q endorsement
  • Must have a knowledge of basic traffic laws and regulations pertaining to local by-laws and the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Must have the ability to maintain effective customer relations with transit patrons and the general public.
  • Must have the ability to maintain effective working relations with other staff members, supervisors and management.
  • Must have the ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in a variety of traffic and emergency situations
  • Must have the ability to understand instructions and effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Completion of a First Aid course and Defensive Driving course is desirable

Working Conditions:

  • Employee will be required to work in a variety of weather conditions and close contact with the public. Adherence to levels of service achieved will be performed under the scrutiny of transit patrons, the general public and supervisory staff.

Remuneration: $28.09 to $31.22 per hour

Hours of Work: As scheduled, between 4:00 am and Midnight, with no minimum guarantee. Shift work, split-shifts and varied schedules will be a regular occurrence.
