Position Summary

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking a confident, enthusiastic, results orientated professional to join our Utilities & Sustainability Team. Reporting to the General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning Services, the Director of Utilities & Sustainability is accountable for the responsible development and management of the City of Fort Saskatchewan’s utilities and sustainability related programs and services. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Director of Utilities & Sustainability provides leadership and direction for the department, as well as supports and provides strategic advice to the General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning Services, the Leadership Team, and members of Council. The Director of Utilities & Sustainability promotes the City’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and Truth and Reconciliation within the department, organization, and community.

Responsibilities

The Utilities & Sustainability department strives to provide safe, reliable, and responsible services. The City’s Utilities program consists of three key services areas: water, sewer, and waste. Examples of programs within Utilities includes three streams of waste collection (solid waste, recycling, and organics), the operating the Transfer + Eco-Station, operating a bulk water station, water sampling, unidirectional and mainline flushing, lift station cleaning, repairs, and routine maintenance.

The Utilities & Sustainability Department works to ensure programs and supporting tools are in place to foster the well-being of the environment, while pursuing efforts to reduce usage or limited resources.
The Director will use their exceptional leadership skills to establish a vision and objectives for the new department, while managing daily utility operations. Having outstanding organizational, communication, system-thinking, and project managements skills, the Director will build a new department for the organization to address growth pressures and strategically advance the utility and sustainability portfolios.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a degree in engineering, business, or an environment related field along with a minimum of six years of professional experience preferably in a municipal environment with minimum 5 years supervisory experience with a demonstrated ability to motivate, mentor and coach staff and the ability to communicate constructively in a positive, confident, and respectful manner (written and oral) to internal and external stakeholders is essential. This position is responsible for the annual operating budget of the Utilities & Sustainability Department and must have experience managing a budget.
