Transition to Adulthood Program:

The goal of SOS Children’s Village BC Transition to Adulthood Program is to meet the needs of youth in developing their independent living and life skills so they can transition into adulthood successfully.

About the Role:

As a Lead Youth Worker for SOS, your responsibilities will include in field direct client contact, case management, as well as some administration duties. In our outreach element the Youth Workers meet with youth regularly these meetings are structured to be convenient, personal and outside of an agency setting, which makes the youth feel valued and secure. We want to make sure our kids know that they are not facing their challenges alone and the SOS team are here to help.

The Youth Workers will lead the SOS team’s efforts to provide support and guidance with housing, school, employment and whatever the youth identifies as a need. The second element of our program is our Village/Residential element, where we are creating a program model in which permanency is key, as life-long connection and support is a key of the SOS Children’s Village vision. The Village/Residential element will be a six month to one year structured program in which Youth Workers will counsel youth and teach life skills, such as cooking, finances, employment, and in addition the SOS Village team can provide extensive therapeutic and other supports.

The non-judgmental, customized and intensive support of this program is sometimes the one last lifeline for kids who have run out of options.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support youth living in the SOS Children’s Village and the community in developing independent living skills and age appropriate life skills
  • Establish rapport with individual service recipients through youth centered practice
  • Establish service goals in collaboration with youth
  • Complete service plans, progress reports and discharge summaries as required
  • Facilitate youth groups focused on independent living skills
  • Provide positive mentorship and guidance
  • Participate in developing and implementing age appropriate program activities
  • Encourage involvement in social and recreational programs
  • Model appropriate behavior and community responsibility
  • Diffuse conflict appropriately
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures and applicable standards
  • Participate in the strategic planning and development of the SOS Children’s Village Transition program.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • CYC Diploma and/or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • 2+ years in professional experience working with youth in a community based or agency setting.
  • Ability to network with other community agencies, services and organizations.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with demonstrated self-confidence and an ability to follow through on assigned duties independently within strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Not-for-Profit organization program delivery.
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively.
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to solve problems and to see different perspectives.
  • Ability to network with other community agencies, services and
  • Working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of standard office equipment, such as photocopier, fax machine and telephone.
  • Clear and current Solicitor General Criminal Record Search
  • Genuine interest in and respect for Aboriginal Culture and meeting cultural needs of children and youth
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Clear and current Drivers Abstract
  • Awareness of applicable provincial legislation and standards
  • Understanding of the issues faced by youth in care and other vulnerable youth

Salary:

Commensurate with experience including a competitive benefit package.
