Applications are invited for the position of Adaptive Technology Specialist in Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services department, located at the Welland campus. The starting hourly rate is $36.19/hr (Payband I - $36.19/hr to $41.94/hr) for a 35 hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services, the successful candidate will support students with disabilities with instruction and guidance regarding the application of useful and suitable technical aids that support student learning. The ATS determines how best to provide students with the technology (hardware and software) that will help promote success in their program of study. The ATS works with students to determine their specific needs and develops a plan for implementation and training.

The ATS provides supports to the Test Centre operation of Niagara College by installing, troubleshooting and maintaining specialized equipment and software for students with disabilities. The ATS also provides technical support in the Test Centre Computer lab and test proctoring services (as required) for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technology solutions and education to students with disabilities
  • Work with students to determine specific technological needs and develop an adaptive technology success plan
  • Research new and existing technologies and make recommendations for purchase or implementation
  • Design and develop training materials to support students use of assistive technologies
  • Train students to use particular hardware and software specific to individual student needs
  • Install, configure, test and trouble shoot complex adaptive software on students personal computers
  • Perform quality assurance testing on software newly introduced to labs and make necessary modifications as required

Qualifications:

  • A minimum three (3) year diploma or degree in Computer Science, Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, Sciences, Allied Health Sciences
  • A minimum of five (5) years practical experience working with technology and/or adaptive technology and persons with disabilities, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Proven experience using assistive devices or technology, preferably in a post-secondary educational setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience teaching or coaching individuals with disabilities considered an asset
