This posting is to establish an eligibility list for future permanent and/or temporary vacancies for the Northern Region.

These positions can be based in any of the following Crown Counsel offices: Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, Smithers, Terrace, Vanderhoof and Williams Lake

If you have up to 5 years of call to the bar and are interested in a future permanent and/or temporary Crown Counsel Level 1 position, please apply through REQ 94530.

The BC Prosecution Service contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province. The Service prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The Service provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal justice. The Service meets court requirements for weekend and evening bail programs through a Comprehensive Bail Program to which Crown Counsel may express an interest or, with notice, may be assigned, subject to operational requirements. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General is responsible for the administration of the Service, which is divided into the Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Crown Law Division and five regions which are headed by a Regional Crown Counsel.

As Crown Counsel, you are responsible for the prosecution of offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and certain other federal statutes from inception to conclusion, as assigned. The decision to lay charges, which charges to lay, and the conduct of proceedings in court through to their conclusion are made by Crown Counsel in accordance with BC Prosecution Service policies and the Crown Counsel Act. Crown Counsel are responsible for ensuring that witnesses, victims, and families are dealt with in a considerate and courteous manner and that victims and their families are adequately prepared for court proceedings.

This position is included in the Crown Counsel Association. Under the Public Service Labour Relations Act, this position is excluded from union membership. Job Requirements:

To be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing OR immediately eligible for call to the Bar.
  • Crown Counsel Level 2: From 6th to 11th year of call, preferably in the practice of Criminal Law.
  • Experience working as Crown Counsel preferred.
  • Lawyers with below 6 years of call to the bar as well as Lawyers with excess of 11 years of call to the bar will not be considered for this position. However, if you are interested in a Crown Counsel Level 1 position and have up to five years of call to the bar, please apply to REQ 94530. If you are interested in a Crown Counsel Level 3 and have more than 12 years of call, please apply to REQ 94865.
