GFL Environmental is looking for an EHS Specialist to join our growing team out of our Calgary office. Reporting directly to the Regional EHS Manager, this position will be fully supporting our Fort McMurray operations, hence, frequent travel to site is required.
As a key member of GFL’s EH&S team, you will be committed to leading and building a collaborative culture that reflects our desire to grow and maintain a healthy and safe work environment for all of our team members. You will be looked to for guidance and professional advice on various situations that our employees encounter in our various operations across western Canada.
Additionally, you will support with larger strategic safety- focused initiative through your close relationships with our functional and operational teams, ensuring that safety is at the top of the mind for all team members and at the forefront of all daily activities.

Key Responsibilities:
Through positive and collaborative interactions while directly supporting our operations, you will grow, develop, and evolve a culture of operational safety excellence throughout assigned western Canadian entities.
Help deliver consistent safety procedures and processes through operationally focused safety mentoring, coaching, and training.
Conduct onsite inspections to evaluate safe work practices
Support operations in conducting incident investigations, utilizing root cause analysis methodologies, which leads to accurate incident classification and subsequent implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
Assist operations with regulatory inspections and investigations
Travel, when appropriate, to operational sites, across Southern Alberta and Fort McMurray, ensuring that our safety culture is consistent, frequently referenced, and visible through discussions with operations, inspections, and observations.
Trend leading and lagging safety data to support proactive safety initiatives.
Support internal and external audits as required.
Support Operations during external COR audits.
Conduct internal COR and NSC audits to ensure continual improvement and compliance.
Maintain a working knowledge of safety theory, transportation compliance, federal, provincial regulations, and company policy.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in an EH&S advisor role, with a proven track record of implementing change in a dynamic operational setting.
Demonstrated ability and experience in changing and evolving organizational safety culture using a collaborative customer-centric model.
Appropriate and relevant educational background and training, supported by ongoing professional development.
Strong understanding of relevant federal and provincial legislation, including safety and transportation codes and regulations.
Experience in hazard recognition with methods to support operations in developing risk mitigation controls.
Experience in writing technical safety documents.
Certified COR auditor an asset
Ability to effectively communicate technical and/or specific safety and transportation compliance initiatives, solutions, or processes in a collaborative manner with front line managers and employees.
Ability to apply previous acquired safety, transportation compliance and relevant-industry knowledge to the unique sector challenges inherent in waste collection and recycling.
Ability to develop a consistent safety culture across a diverse set of operations.
