Electrical Designer Duties and Responsibilities

The Electrical Designer will see ideas through from the feasibility stage through to the final site review of construction.

Designing

The Electrical Designer will be presented with a situation that needs to be figured out. After consulting with interested parties, such as engineers, managers, clients, and colleagues, they will begin designing solutions. Using CAD software, the electrical designer drafts what the electrical system will look like based on established standards and communications with engineers. Their work includes electrical specifications and detailed drawings.

Planning

The Electrical Designer will estimate the time, cost, labor, and materials that are needed to produce a real version of their ideas. They will reformulate plans along the way based on unexpected circumstances or client changes. It is expected that the Electrical Designer will maintain accurate time sheets on a daily basis supported by weekly time sheets submissions, including a description of the work activity performed each day that week, broken down by the number of hours attributable to each project, and include the applicable project number.

Attending to Safety

Preventing electrical hazards is a top priority for the electrical designer, thus, they possess a thorough understanding of relevant standards, including the Canadian Electric Code (CEC), National and Provincial Building Codes, and relevant CAN/ULC Standards.

Updating

The Electrical designer may be responsible for one part of a larger project. They have to keep colleagues, managers, and clients in the loop as to progress and deviations from schedule or budget so as not to disturb the workflow of the whole project.

Monitoring

The Electrical designer may be on-site during some or all of the installation of their design to make sure things are going as planned, answer questions, and respond to any problems.

Electrical Designer Skills

· Communicating effectively with fellow technical staff, as well as with clients and other people who may need things explained in layman’s terms

· Working well with others since projects are often done as a team

· Problem-solve and to adjust when plans don’t go as expected

· Attend to detail to ensure consistency and safety of final products

· Maintaining professionalism when dealing with colleagues and clients

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $15.50-$36.26 per hour
