Family Practice Physician – Rocky Mountain Health Centre

Come and practice in the beautiful city of Fernie. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of South Eastern BC, Fernie is 70 minutes away from the Cranbrook airport and 3-hour drive west of Calgary, Alberta.

The Rocky Mountain Health Centre (RMHC) in Fernie is seeking a full scope rural family practitioner to join our collegial and supportive 6 physician practice. The ideal candidate will participate in clinical work, Emergency Department (ED), hospital, and residential care. Duty Doctor for hospital coverage is a shared responsibility by our entire physician group and generally required for two weeks annually. ED (8 hr) shifts will be shared amongst 12 physicians which allows for the flexibility to drop/swap call. Obstetric care is optional. Our clinic uses Intrahealth Profile EMR. We have excellent support staff and regular access to an in-clinic chronic disease RN, Primary Maternity Care RN, and community social worker. The clinic patient population is a mix of seniors, those with chronic disease, young families, athletes, and seasonal tourists.

Our clinic offers excellent teaching potential. We are affiliated with UBC Medical School and we regularly have medical students and residents. Fernie has great locum coverage with 3 permanent community locums as well as physicians who want to locum to check out our outdoors! If you are interested in being a permanent locum rather than taking on a panel, the RMHC could guarantee as much work as desired for their current 7 physician practice.

The Elk Valley Hospital is a 20-bed facility, servicing a population of 15,000 from Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, to South Country. Physicians cover their own in-patients on weekdays with an option to have a duty doctor cover the weekends and holidays. The operating theatre is open 24 hr per day, 365 days a year. Enhanced medical services in Fernie include 1 gastroenterologist, 4 GP anesthetists, 1 GPESS and 2 GPOSS. Our regional referral center is the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook where we have excellent specialty and radiology support. Our Maternity Providers serve between 110-130 maternity patients annually.

In Fernie, we receive level 1 MOCAP funding for the ER, REEF funding, and funding for long term care patients and duty doc services. Our NIA is 16.5%. Overhead is 30% on MSP billing’s and on any additional billings (private pay patients, WorkSafe, medico legal, etc). Bonuses are not subject to overhead (MOCAP, retention, REEF, etc.).

Fernie is in a magnificent outdoor setting. Visitors often boost ‘Come for the winter, stay for the summer’. The world-class Fernie Alpine Resort is located less than 10km from the hospital. Nordic ski trails, snow mobiling, epic year round mountain biking, hiking, and world renown fly fishing are all on our doorstep. Fernie boasts a charming historic downtown district with many excellent dining options. Our vibrant arts & culture community provides many festivals and events to keep you busy.

Fernie is home to young families with many early learning programs, excellent schools (both public and independent), an aquatic center, splash park, dirt jump park, skate park, an indoor ice rink and a full range of clubs and special interest organizations.
