As a Planner 1, you will support The City's strategic growth initiatives by working in a policy planning and implementation role. You will work to implement The City’s vision for growth and change in the Municipal Development Plan by supporting sound decision making that enables strategic growth and change. You will work with internal and external stakeholders on analytical tasks related to land use planning and infrastructure planning. You will support the team with writing and reviewing reports and business cases, implementing various City planning policies and processes and supporting strategic growth outcomes. Primary duties include:
  • Conduct research and analysis, contribute to and support decision making on local area plans, planning applications, and strategic growth decisions.
  • Support senior management and Council decision-making via analysis, particularly on the subjects of strategic growth policy, land use district capacities, capital and operating investments, and the coordination of infrastructure and services with development.
  • Support team conversations with external partners, including citizens, communities, business organizations, and those involved in the development industry to identify broad, mutually beneficial solutions to growth issues, including City initiated land use district redesignations and policy amendments.
  • Represent The City on planning matters across different development types, including new community, established, and industrial/commercial.
  • Respond to high priority issues, politically sensitive situations and customer service requests.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Planning that is recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP); OR
  • A degree in a Planning related discipline with at least 1 year of relevant planning experience.
  • Demonstrated technical skills regarding population, land and development analysis will be considered an asset.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of planning principles and legislation, sound planning analysis and the application of decision making skills are critical for success in this position.
  • Strategic and analytical thinker with a demonstrated ability to work with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective communication skills, with a focus on customer service and collaboration and the ability to build strategic working relationships in a political environment.

Compensation: Pay Grade 11 $42.09 to 56.27 per hour
Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.


Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
