Forestry and Peatlands Branch within the department of Natural Resoureces and Northern Development is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Planning and Practices Forester located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This role is part of a team responsible for the planning and development of Crown land forests in Manitoba and covers a wide array of program areas including forest management planning, guideline development, timber administration, Crown-Indigenous consultation, and peatlands management.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats, and by rotary or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position which require moderate physical effort (e.g. Carrying equipment such as chainsaws and forestry samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions).
  • Must posses and maintain a valid full Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime when required, and work out-of-town for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels, and tents.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Post secondary degree in Forestry or related field of study with work experience in field forestry operations and/or a combination of other resource related education, training and experience.
  • Experience in forest management planning and practices.
  • Experience researching, analyzing and interpreting legislation, regulations and other information to formulate management recommendations and facilitate policy development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders such as government, non-government, industry, and resource users, as well as the public.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to work on several projects simultaneously and prioritize workloads to meet strict deadlines
  • Strong problem solving, analytical skills and decision making skills.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to write various documents and detailed analytical reports for decision makers and stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience working with Indigenous people and communities.
Desired:
  • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and related applications including ArcGIS Online (AGOL).

Duties:
Reporting directly to the Section Manager, Planning and Development, the position is responsible for leading forestry guideline development and coordinating forest management planning. The position is a key provincial liaison with forest industry representatives and other stakeholders. The position responsibilities are complex, requiring a high degree of critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as skills to collaborate, foster relations and make sound management recommendations.
