Responsibilities:

  • Actively collaborates in research projects through cataloguing, analyzing, and interpreting primary and secondary sources.
  • Co-writes research articles for publication.
  • Researches documents in archives, libraries and online.
  • Expands and maintains collections of resources pertinent to current projects conducted by the Chair.
  • Plans, organizes and supervises activities and material preparation in support of research and teaching.
  • Maintains current knowledge in German-Canadian Studies, Oral History and various research methodologies.
  • Collaborates in the writing of grant applications and helps to secure funding through internal and external grant programs.
  • Participates in SSHRC webinars and Research Starts Here Webinars.
  • Completes professional development course: CS50 Intro to Python Programming (EdX) to help improve coding skills for digital qualitative analysis and the Introduction to Oral History workshop.
  • Supervises, trains, and assigns work to the research assistants’ team.
  • Scheduled to teach a workshop in HIST-3560: The German-Canadian Presence in Canadian History (Spring 2024).
  • Submits requests to Purchasing to purchase necessary material, software and subscriptions.
  • Posts available positions through HR, and assists with the hiring process.
  • Adapts existing materials and ideas for emerging needs: updates and edits archived oral histories into new interactive digital course material.
  • Selects, organizes and maintains a subject pool of individuals for oral history interviews, including computerized records.
  • Supervises and coordinates day-to-day operations of various research projects and communications in German-Canadian Studies.
  • Assists in preparing annual reports, budgets and projections.
  • Assists in preparing the 20-year report for the Chair.
  • Catalogues and organizes the Chair’s publications and conference presentations.
  • Regularly updates, maintains and adjusts the University of Winnipeg German Canadian Studies (GCS) website.
  • Regularly writes articles and records podcast episodes for the GCS Blog.
  • Manages the social media presence of GCS and updates the Blog.
  • Remains well informed on Canadian and UW Copyright policies.
  • Files administrative documents, organizes hard copy and digital material.
  • Maintains inventory of primary and secondary sources on a shared bibliographical software.
  • Schedules staff meetings and team meetings.
  • Creates metadata charts for primary sources and inputs data into various databases.
  • Translates interviews and reports from English/German to French.
  • Enters bibliographic data of secondary and primary source materials into databases.
  • Enters reading notes, summaries and reflections into bibliographic database to be shared by the research team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in a related discipline, honours preferred.
  • 3 years of experience conducting research in history or a related field in the Humanities.
  • 2 years of experience in project management (supervising a team).
  • 1 year of experience in administrative work.
  • Fluent English skills: highly developed oral, written and communication skills with ability to demonstrate and explain complex ideas to various audiences.
  • Advanced German skills (writing and speaking).
  • French skills are an asset.
  • Good knowledge of MS office suite, Teams, Zoom and Zotero.
  • Willingness to learn how to use other bibliographic and qualitative data software.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and establish schedules and deadlines for work processes.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and work autonomously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
