The Marine Institute’s Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) provides applied research and industry outreach as well as scientific and technical advisory services to a broad range of ocean sector clients. Expertise is offered in areas ranging from ocean observation and ocean mapping to remotely operated vehicles and the operation of autonomous surface and underwater technologies. The Centre operates and maintains the SmartAtlantic ocean observing system consisting of a subsea node and a series of met/ocean buoys throughout Atlantic Canada and the supporting data storage and manipulation backbone. The observing system also serves as a host network supporting the development and testing of innovative ocean instruments.
The position is located at The Launch, in Holyrood, NL, the Marine Institute’s state-of-the-art 42,000 sq. ft. ocean-side applied research and learning complex.
DUTIES
Specific duties will include but are not limited to: engineering novel solutions for operations in remote and harsh marine environments; responsibility for maintenance, deployment and operation of oceanographic instrumentation and remote/autonomous vehicles, including hardware/firmware/software maintenance; troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing common problems with marine equipment, oceanographic buoys, remote/autonomous vehicles, sensors, cables, connectors, computers, and networks. Depending on the scope and focus of a particular project, the Project Engineer will provide services ranging from systems design and implementation, data collection and management, and testing and deployment of new instruments, software, and equipment. The successful applicants will be expected to work directly with ocean sector clients, researchers, and technology developers. An element of travel within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador can be expected. There may also be a requirement for short at-sea trips on Marine Institute or client's vessels.
QUALIFICATIONS
SALARY: $61,552 to $79,931 per annum (Technical Assistants Scale, TA V, NAPE Local 7405)
