British Columbia’s Natural Resource Ministries (NRM) are the stewards of the Province’s Crown land and natural resources which reflect the diverse values and interests of all British Columbians. In order to support the growth of the economy while providing effective environmental stewardship, the province’s NRM must transform in order to advance the shared management of British Columbia’s natural resources.

Natural Resource Information & Digital Services (NRIDS) is leading the modernization and transformation of business practices for the NRM through continuous improvement projects, new technology options and operational information management/information technology (IM/IT). NRIDS is providing leadership for IM/IT planning, policy and business process solutions and is also the single authority for all information and technology across the NRM.

Reporting to the Fish and Wildlife Team Lead, the Wildlife Information Specialist manages provincial terrestrial wildlife species and habitat data, systems, tools, applications, products, and related information to ensure the availability of accurate, science-based information to support natural resource decision making. This position functions in a dynamic environment and must work in close collaboration with other units in the section, branch, and ministry as well as natural resource sector regional staff, external partners, and clients to ensure effective data management solutions.

An analytical thinker, you evaluate resource use applications, review proposals, engage in consultation with stakeholders, and evaluate and make recommendations and/or approvals. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, are results oriented and an effective problem solver. You are highly service oriented with excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to develop creative solutions to natural resource management issues. Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Resource Management, Biology, Geomatics, Computer Science, or related area and 2 years of related experience*; OR
  • Diploma in Geography, Resource Management, Biology, Geomatics, Computer Science, or related area AND 4 years of related experience*; OR
  • Another relevant combination of education and training, AND six (6) years of *related experience may be considered.
  • Related experience includes all of the following:
  • Experience working with large, complex spatial data using GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle, MS Access, PostgreSQL and PostGIS.
  • Experience programming/scripting (e.g. Python, R, VBA, JavaScript etc.) for the purposes of data management, visualization, and scientific communication.
  • Experience communicating technical advice and information to non-technical users, team members, and clients.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience working with platforms that support open-source workflows, such as GitHub, JIRA, React, Ionic, Shiny and Leaflet.
  • Experience working with Agile development processes, including scrum, backlogs, sprint planning and sprint reviews.
  • Experience developing web maps and/or applications (e.g. story Maps, Dashboards, Suvery123, Collector, Web AppBuilder).
  • Experience working with scientific data, supporting the needs of professionals in the natural resource sector.
