Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Success, the Student Success Mentor provides support to students in all facets of College life. As a Mentor, advocacy for the student, and the interests of the student’s holistic success at Loyalist College is the highest priority. The Mentor is the liaison between students, parents, faculty, management, and college resources to enable students to be successful in their chosen academic path. The Mentor provides academic advice for current and potential students and their families. The incumbent also connects with students at risk and helps them to develop recovery strategies and access resources (both internal and external to the College community) to help them overcome barriers that might impede their academic achievements. Recognizing barriers and impediments to success, the Student Success Mentor supports student self-advocacy during meetings and amidst processes where the student’s voice is most required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Using a trauma-informed lens, provides support to students in navigating academic and non-academic issues
  • Supports student self-advocacy during meetings with faculty and amidst other academic and administrative processes
  • As part of a team operating under a trauma-informed model, acts to “triage” referrals from a number of sources and makes recommendations to access both internal college resources and external service providers; uses conflict resolution and mediation strategies to de-escalate situations and make referrals to Counselling and/or AccessAbility as required
  • Establishes and approves non-standard timetables for students based on knowledge of program of study, subject availability, and course load
  • Coordinates learning plans to support students with an identified career path
  • Develops Collaborative Success plans to promote individual student success
  • Identifies and develops activities based on data that will support student success (Learn 2 Learn, Time Management, Study Skills,/Note-taking/Test Taking, Stress Management)
  • Provides information to students on withdrawal process/ transferring to an alternate program to ensure that students not only adhere to the processes with minimal impact on their current and future learning plans but also consider other learning options
  • Initiates and expedites interim solutions in emergency/crisis situations
  • Collaborates with “Risk Assessment and Review” cases as requested
  • Supports the College’s recruitment activities by participating in Open House and other events designed to attract prospective students
  • Acts as an advisor for potential College Prep and Second Career Students and families
  • Provides information and support to Dual Credit students in developing learning pathways
  • Acts as a liaison for WSIB students, Crown wards and military personnel transitioning to the college environment
  • Maintains case notes and files on current caseload
  • Processes a variety of student forms e.g. consent forms, accommodation requests etc.
  • Provides statistical reports to the College executive team as requested
  • Maintains currency in provincial guidelines and legislative compliance and best practices in field

Qualifications

  • Completion of a four-year degree, preferably in a Social Sciences field
  • Minimum five (5) year’s experience in an academic environment and/or in social services; experience in an Ontario College is an asset
  • Experience supporting individuals applying the principles of trauma-informed care
  • Knowledge of post-secondary programs, services and policies is essential
  • Understanding of the unique and diverse needs of college students
  • Strong advocacy skills
  • An ability to apply an understanding of diversity and inclusiveness to meet the needs of a diverse staff and student population
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively listening to ensure understanding of students’ needs and responding to those needs in a safe and respectful approach
  • Demonstrated ability to compose clear and concise written correspondence
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, ensuring the success of our students
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and familiarity with conflict resolution and mediation
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver presentations to large groups of students, parents, and faculty
  • Ability to manage and organize time effectively
