Tenure Track, Assistant Professor

Global Literature pre-1800

The University of Winnipeg is in Treaty One territory and is located on the traditional territory of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. The English Department recognizes the role of the English language and English as an academic discipline in contributing to the historical and present formations of settler colonialism and imperialism in Canada and around the world. In giving expression to our Land Acknowledgement, we commit ourselves to engaging with, questioning, and challenging these formations in ways that support the decolonizing work being done by Indigenous peoples in Manitoba and elsewhere.

We invite applications from members of racialized communities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQ+ persons for a tenure-track position in English at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2023. This position is subject to budgetary approval. Applicants should have, at minimum, a PhD degree in English or a directly related field, and evidence of an active research program in any area of global literature published before 1800.

The Department of English, one of the largest at the University of Winnipeg, strives to develop and maintain innovative programs and small classes. Students can pursue a traditional literary studies trajectory, with the possibility of earning a 3-year, 4-year, or Honours B.A. in English, or they may specialize in Creative Writing, Young People’s Texts and Cultures, or Screen and Cultural Studies. The department houses the only M.A. Cultural Studies program in Western Canada, with participating faculty from across the university. This program offers two streams of specialization, one in Curatorial Practices and the other in Texts and Cultures.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in academic life by maintaining an active research program, contributing to curriculum development, and serving on committees. They will be expected to teach courses in the department’s undergraduate programs, including First-Year English, and develop new courses in their area of specialization that are compatible with the department’s commitment to decolonization, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach in the M.A. Cultural Studies program.
