This role will be a member of the Next Generation Advanced SCLAIRTECHTM R&D team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR), located in Calgary, Alberta. As a member of the Next Generation Advanced SCLAIRTECHTM R&D team, the Senior Research Engineer will collaborate with an experienced team of engineers and scientists to advance the competitiveness of NOVA’s proprietary Advanced SCLAIRTECHTM Technology (AST) platform. This solution-based polyethylene production process, with dual reactors technology, allows us to maximize the capability of our catalyst innovations and produce value-added products for our customers. Our research programs are targeted to: Improve asset operating efficiencies Innovate processes that enable commercialization of new catalyst developments Develop models and process operating conditions which will allow the cost-effective scale up and manufacture of value-added products

In this role, your knowledge and experience with polyolefin chemistry, catalysis, manufacturing process, and technology commercialization enable the scaling up of our catalyst and process technology improvements to deliver desired products and improve our AST assets efficiencies. You will enable NOVA Chemicals’ ambitions for continuous value creation, decarbonization and a circular economy.

You will use your expertise to: Devote a high priority on assessing and addressing safety risks. Collaborating with product scientists, catalyst chemists, manufacturing staff and other disciplines to develop and manage a portfolio of proprietary and innovative solutions that pertain to the exploration, development, and implementation of process improvements, new or existing products, and catalyst solutions that help NOVA Chemicals serve its customers. Participate in strategic activities including developing white papers and roadmaps for AST platform to support NOVA business strategy. Able to critically analyze data and draw conclusions and recommendations on projects and advises go/no-go decisions to senior leadership. Identify and translate industry trends and customer needs into research deliverables and future strategic business needs. Become in-house expert with fundamental knowledge of conceptual process development broadly including but not limited to polyethylene chemistry and manufacturing processes, scale-up, thermodynamics, and process simulations. Become an expert in the technology commercialization and meet research or other project goals within time and budget constraints. Effectively interact with the business, vendors, and academia to develop innovative ideas and business opportunities. Document ideas and contributions to intellectual property. Communication of results and findings to project team members, technology, engineering, manufacturing staff and leadership through meetings, presentations, technical memos and reports and projects.

What We Are Looking For: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with 10+ years of related experience. A strong background in polyolefin polymerization technologies, technology scale up, plant troubleshooting, and process simulation tools with the ability to use this expertise to identify business opportunities for NOVA Chemicals. Eligibility or registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is required. Demonstrated experience for leading research projects and cross-functional collaborations for implementation of new products/catalyst technologies and process optimization is required. Fundamental understanding of polyethylene polymerization processes and catalyst innovations (LLDPE, HDPE, LDPE, etc.). Empirical understanding of process thermodynamics for polymeric materials, transport phenomena (fluid flow, heat & mass transfer), and reaction kinetics.

In addition, you will: Be a self-starter and proactive; capable of working independently to identify, lead and drive projects to completion while retaining flexibility and maintaining composure under pressure. Excellent consultation and communication skills. Have a positive and team-oriented attitude and foster collaborative relationships at all organizational levels to build and support a team environment. Demonstrate a high attention to detail, accuracy, and precision. Must show good practice of the Scientific Methodology and documents their work via technical reports, intellectual property, conference presentations and journals. Demonstrate a commitment to Responsible Care®, strong project and time management capabilities, and aptitude for problem solving/troubleshooting.

Additional Information:
Relocation will be considered for this position.
Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
This role requires up to 10% travel.
The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
